Grief Nest sits under NSP pillars three and four, and it works on a problem that rarely appears in GBVF programming. When a spouse dies, the surviving partner often faces a second harm: disputes over property and inheritance, pressure from in-laws, and mourning rituals imposed against their will. Parks Mananiso, Challenge Strategist, describes it as a vulnerability with serious consequences, one that divides families and leaves people carrying psychological abuse with no route to support.
The team’s response is to educate widows and widowers about their rights and the avenues open to them after a death, then link them to services. Community development and Department of Health field workers bring cases forward, and the team works with social development and the Department of Justice, keeping individual privacy intact. Alongside the main goal, they are running build-up sessions on alcohol, gambling and financial wellness, because those pressures show up repeatedly in the households they are reaching.
The municipality’s second challenge sits under pillar five. The team is building an economic route out of dependency for GBVF survivors through agri-business and agro-processing. The reasoning is direct: a survivor who leaves an abusive relationship and returns with nothing to do is more exposed, not less. Three survivors have been identified and verified so far, with clinical support services convening them for a first discussion. The team is working with provincial partners including COGTA, human settlements and the Office of the Premier to widen the project.
Both challenges launched with the stakeholders in the room from day one: public safety, social crime prevention, social services, SAPS and provincial COGTA.
