Addressing Substance Abuse and Gangsterism to Curb GBVF in Rand West City

Rand West City Local Municipality is rising to the occasion. Through their End GBVF 100-Day Challenges, the municipality has committed to reducing GBVF incidents in hot zones by 25%, focusing directly on dismantling the drivers of violence, namely, gangsterism and substance abuse.

In many South African communities, the link between substance abuse, gangsterism, and Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) is undeniable. These social ills do not exist in isolation, they fuel and reinforce one another, creating environments where fear, exploitation, and violence become entrenched.
In identified hot zone areas, the risks are particularly high. Substance abuse can disinhibit violent behaviour, while gangs operate through intimidation and coercion – conditions that not only increase the likelihood of GBVF but also silence survivors. This is not just a criminal issue; it’s a systemic, community-level crisis that demands urgent and coordinated responses.

Rand West City Local Municipality is rising to the occasion. Through their End GBVF 100-Day Challenges, the municipality has committed to reducing GBVF incidents in hot zones by 25%, focusing directly on dismantling the drivers of violence, namely, gangsterism and substance abuse.

Importantly, the municipality is also engaging schools, with an ambitious goal to reduce school-related GBVF incidents by 50%. Early intervention, youth engagement, and safe learning environments are key to protecting the next generation from falling into cycles of crime and abuse.

This time-bound challenge is not just about reaching targets, it’s about restoring hope, safety, and accountability in communities that need it most. It shows that when local leaders, service providers, and citizens unite behind a shared goal, real change is possible.
