Mission Accomplished: Nkowankowa Magistrate Court’s 2025 End GBVF 100-Day Challenge Close-Out results

As the 2025 – End GBVF 100-Day Challenge comes to a close, the Nkowankowa Magistrate Court is proud to report on its efforts and significant achievements. The court’s mission was clear: to directly address Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) by tackling the very system that victims rely on for justice.

The team’s focus area was to reduce the backlog of cases, a critical step in ensuring swift and effective protection for vulnerable individuals.

The court team set a powerful goal: a 100% reduction of backlogged cases. They understood that for victims of GBVF, justice delayed is justice denied. The key strategy was the use of technology, specifically virtual hearings. This forward-thinking approach was vital in fast-tracking sensitive cases, reducing trauma for participants, and ensuring the wheels of justice turned faster.

The Final 100-Day Results

The Nkowankowa Magistrate Court team made incredible progress, directly impacting those most in need. The final results are:

  • 100% reduction in backlog cases for maintenance and domestic violence. This is a monumental achievement in the court’s action against GBVF, ensuring that survivors receive the urgent legal support they require.
  • 80% reduction in backlog cases for divorce proceedings.

Beyond these crucial statistics, another significant positive impact was observed: teamwork and collaboration within the court were greatly improved. This strengthened resolve is essential for the ongoing action against GBVF.

Strategies and Challenges

This success was not accidental. It was the result of a concerted effort focused on several key activities:

  • Improved Stakeholder Communication: The court fostered stronger, more proactive communication channels.
  • Enhanced Teamwork: Court staff united with a shared purpose, working cohesively and effectively.
  • Embracing Technology: The use of virtual hearings was a game-changer for efficiency.
  • Public-Focused Service: The court reaffirmed its commitment to assisting members of the public with speed and empathy.

The journey was not without its challenges. The primary hurdle was getting other external stakeholders to fully commit to the accelerated pace required to finalise these cases. Overcoming this resistance required persistence and clear communication about the urgency of the court’s mission.

This 100-Day Challenge served as a powerful catalyst for change. The results demonstrate that with innovation, dedication, and a victim-centric approach, the justice system can be made faster and more responsive. The Nkowankowa Magistrate Court’s commitment to ending GBVF continues with renewed vigour.
