How a 100-Day Challenge is Revolutionising Domestic Violence Case Management in Mahwelereng court

Cycle 1 Team news | Mahwelereng court

Swift justice is crucial. Victims often face an agonising wait for their day in court, which can exacerbate the trauma and delay healing. However, a recent 100-Day Challenge has flipped the script, dramatically reducing the time it takes to finalise domestic violence cases and giving victims the justice they deserve much faster.

A Surge in Case Resolutions

At the outset of this ambitious 100-Day Challenge, over 1,000 domestic violence cases were in the pipeline. The challenge was clear: reduce the time it takes to bring these cases to a close and increase the number of finalizations per day. The results have been nothing short of remarkable.

Before the challenge, it typically took five months to finalise a domestic violence case. By the end of the 100 days, that timeline had been slashed to just three months. The pace of finalizations accelerated dramatically, with an average of 10 cases being resolved each day on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, and 5 on Wednesdays and Fridays. But during the challenge, the number of cases finalised on these days doubled, showing the effectiveness of the strategies implemented.

The Strategy Behind the Success

How did the team pull off this incredible feat? It all boiled down to a well-coordinated, collaborative effort among all stakeholders involved.

  1. Collaboration and Relationship Building: The foundation of this success was the nurturing of strong relationships among everyone involved in the process—from law enforcement to legal professionals and social services. By fostering open communication and a shared commitment to the cause, the team was able to align their efforts towards a common goal.
  2. Efficient Case Management: The team focused on reducing postponement dates, which can often drag cases out for months or even years. Under normal circumstances, cases postponed in July might not return to court until the following January. However, with this new approach, those cases are now being heard as early as November, shaving four critical weeks off the waiting period.
  3. Streamlined Processes: By critically assessing what needed to be done at each step of the process, the team was able to identify and eliminate bottlenecks. This not only sped up individual cases but also allowed more cases to be finalised in a shorter period.

A New Standard for Justice

The results of the 100-Day Challenge are a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when everyone involved in the justice system works together towards a common goal. Victims of domestic violence are now seeing their cases resolved faster, helping them to move forward with their lives. This initiative is setting a new standard for how domestic violence cases should be handled—swiftly, efficiently, and with the utmost care for the victims’ well-being.

As we look forward, the challenge serves as a beacon of hope and a call to action for continued innovation in the pursuit of justice. The success of this initiative proves that with determination, collaboration, and a clear focus, even the most entrenched systems can be transformed for the better.
