City of Ekurhuleni’s End GBVF 100-Day Challenge
The City of Ekurhuleni’s participation in the End GBVF (Gender-Based Violence and Femicide) 100-Day Challenge demonstrates the power of collaboration and community-focused action. Divided into three regions – North, South, and East – each with unique challenges, the initiative set ambitious goals to prevent violence, rebuild social cohesion, and strengthen justice and care systems.
Addressing GBVF Across Ekurhuleni’s Regions
Each region tailored its approach to address the specific needs of its communities.
- The Southern Region prioritized increasing professional support in schools, aiming to provide psycho-social assistance to 100 learners.
- The Northern Region focused on strengthening the collaboration between the state and civil society.
- The Eastern Region sought to mobilize qualified professionals to support victim-friendly rooms.
Achievements That Made a Difference
The Southern Region’s achievements were remarkable, with psycho-social support in targeted schools increasing from 5% to 50%. Instances of uncontrollable learner behavior plummeted from 60% to just 5%, while the visibility of professionals addressing GBVF issues grew from 1% to 10%. Collaboration between stakeholders—social workers, NGOs, SAPS, and other civil society actors—proved to be a driving force behind these successes. The establishment of smooth referral systems and prompt responses to GBVF cases demonstrated the transformative potential of united efforts.
Overcoming Challenges to Drive Change
Despite significant achievements, the challenge was not without hurdles. Resistance from colleagues accustomed to routine and the silo mentality of certain stakeholders hindered progress, particularly in the North and East regions.
However, the Southern Region overcame these obstacles by leveraging virtual meetings and fostering an inclusive, determined team spirit. The unwavering commitment of the team to push forward despite limited resources showcased the power of collective resolve.
Building Relationships That Last
The challenge fostered new and strengthened relationships with organizations passionate about addressing GBVF. Notably, it highlighted the importance of including men in the conversation, paving the way for a more inclusive approach to tackling gender-based violence. The City also recognized the need to break down silos within municipal departments to create joint programs with greater impact, ensuring resources are used effectively.
Sustaining Impact for Future Generations
Looking ahead, the City of Ekurhuleni is committed to sustaining the momentum built during the 100-Day Challenge. Plans include strengthening stakeholder forums, providing lay counseling training to community members, and recruiting additional partners to expand the reach of future initiatives. Quarterly stakeholder meetings and a push to involve the Department of Education aim to institutionalize these efforts, ensuring long-term impact.
A Call for Empowerment
The City is eager to see more stakeholders and community members take up the mantle of leadership in future challenges. Empowering others to lead ensures that the fight against GBVF continues to grow stronger and more inclusive, reaching every corner of Ekurhuleni.
Through its 100-Day Challenge journey, the City of Ekurhuleni has demonstrated that addressing GBVF requires commitment, collaboration, and a willingness to innovate. While the road ahead is long, the foundation laid by this initiative provides hope for a safer, more just future for all.
