Capricorn TVET 100-Day Challenge: Capacity Building Workshop Addresses GBV and Bullying
Capricorn TVET, in partnership with Capricorn Municipality, recently hosted a two-day capacity-building workshop in Polokwane from 25–26 September as part of phase two of the 100-Day Challenge. The primary goal of this challenge is to increase the reporting of Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) incidents from a baseline of 20% to 80% by the end of the 100 days.
The focus on capacity building within a college environment is crucial in addressing pressing issues like GBV and bullying. Colleges play a key role in shaping the attitudes and behaviors of young people, and empowering student counsellors, peer educators, and other stakeholders with the right skills and knowledge is vital for creating safe spaces and fostering open dialogue. These efforts not only help raise awareness but also encourage victims to come forward and report incidents.
The workshop brought together representatives from the Office of the Premier, COGHSTA, LEDA, LEDET, the Department of Agriculture, DSD Community Development, SAPS, Polokwane Municipality, all four campuses of Capricorn TVET College, as well as student counsellors, NACOSA, Youth Action Health, Future Families, Eyes of the Nation, and the Disability Forum. Together, they discussed progress made on the implementation of the 100-Day Challenge and agreed on key activities to be completed within the remaining 44 days.
By building capacity and working closely with students and key stakeholders, the municipality hopes to create lasting change in reporting GBV and bullying incidents, ensuring safer and more supportive environments for all.
