GBV NATIONAL RESOURCE DIRECTORY

The Resource Directory serves as one of the strategies to reduce the victimization caused by protracted cross-referencing of the victims. All information in this Resource Directory has been obtained from the provincial Victim Empowerment Programme: (VEP) coordinators and provincial VEP service providers (counterparts). The layout of the Resource Directory is in an alphabetical order and national and provincial maps are inserted. The maps will assist in visualising where the victim is and appropriate/accurate locating or referring is imperative and can save a person’s life.

NICDAM is participating in research on GBVF. For example, in partnership with UNODC, UN Women, UNICEF and UNFPA, and under the directive of DWYPD, NICDAM collaborated in the development of the Comprehensive National Prevention Strategy (CNPS) on GBVF (First Draft) in 2021/22. This extensive literature research, that built on the National Strategic Plan (NSP), also involved engagements with more than 100 stakeholders.

NICDAM is currently implementing three projects with NACOSA, NDOH, and HWSETA in GBVF Hotspot areas in South Africa. These projects addresses the intersectionality of HIV and GBVF through testing for HIV and providing ATRs, prevention activities and psychosocial support services for survivors.

SHELTERS
Services for victims of crime and violence

A shelter is a residential facility that accommodates all victims as well as their caregivers – dependents up to the age of 18 years (unless infrastructure provides for the admission of youth older than 18 years in a situation where the livelihood and safety is at risk). Shelters are set up to provide short term intervention in a
crisis situation for one day up to approximately six months (6 months) as the need dictates. There are currently 134 shelters (including Khuseleka One Stop Centres and Crisis Centres) across the country.

Thuthuzela Care Centres (TCCs) are one-stop facilities that have been introduced as a critical part of South Africa’s anti-rape strategy, aiming to reduce secondary victimisation and to build a case ready for successful prosecution. Fifty one centres have been established since 2006.

The Thuthuzela project is led by the NPA’s Sexual Offences and Community Affairs Unit (SOCA), in partnership with various departments and donors as a response to the urgent need for an integrated strategy for prevention, response and support for rape victims. Since its establishment, the SOCA Unit has been working to develop best practices and policies that seek to eradicate victimisation of women and children, while improving prosecution, particularly in the areas of sexual offences, maintenance, child justice and domestic violence.
